I was raised in Indiana. My dad also referred to our couch as a davenport.

I'm not sure. But I think it was the name of a sofa manufacturer.

Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a generalized trademark.

A davenport is a type of upholstered convertible couch that was manufactured by the A.H. Davenport Co., which is why sofas are sometimes referred to as davenports. Davenport can also refer to a writing desk.

@cwlair Because Davenport was the name of popular sofa company. People call their recliners lazy-boys but not all are LB's

My grandparents in Ohio called it a davan...short for Davenport. Also called a loveseat a settee. We say couch or sofa these days.

Because MANY years ago, the most popular couch was made by the A.H. Davenport company. So, it kind of became a generic name, like those Kleenex and Cokes y’all have been discussing.
