Set people on the defensive you get less useful information. The polite approach may not appeal to those wishing verbal lashing but informational content usually increased if carefully crafted questions asked.

I thing far to many people want the Jerry Springer/Judge Judy interview but to to reasonable, just ask the questions and keep them on topic. Just because I don't like someone doesn't mean they should be ambushed nor does it mean they should only get softball questions either.

Manners in an interview r always good bcse the viewer realizes the interviewer is getting answers through logic not intimidation.
