2/ Let’s start with something that hits close to home for everyone. Student Debt. The American Dream is based around education, but if ppl can’t afford it, how do you advance?http://bit.ly/2BXpTNi

4/Your tweet mentions "get out the biggest cities." I think you are alluding to race, not sure, if so, I’d say race is an issue all over the country, but let’s go with you idea that outside big cities ppl get along. Here’s a story you might want to read:https://reut.rs/2BWsFlU

6/ Let me back away from race tho, I’m sure your tweet was for a largely white audience who wants to be assured that things are okay and they can’t really deal with race. So let’s talk about what they can deal with?

Al-- if you see everything as being about race and how "white" people can't deal with it -- which is itself racist -- we probably can't have a real dialog. I don't tend to engage with people who make racial comments.

Racism is about a power relationship not in play here. Offering a critique about how journalism often tends to think first of its white audience is not racist in the least. It's the first step toward imagining an audience that includes, and is in dialogue with the *whole* public.

He assumed I aim toward a "white" audience because I'm "white." Hm. Maybe all that's ok with you but I frown on those sort of race based presumptions and generalizations.

I felt it was because of the "most people are fine" "outside of the cities" remark. I just don't understand the benefit of excluding certain communities from the conversation to force a "most things are fine" narrative. @fivefifths responded to this more thoughtfully than I.

But if your point is that people are surviving and thriving despite many barriers, finding community and living full lives even when the odds are against them, I'll buy that. I just didn't really read what you were saying that way.

that's what I meant. and the barriers are many-- yet we do quite well. often with the help of our neighbors and friends and community who are not necessarily like us in many ways.

Hi Sharyl. I’m outside of any city, and I go outside, away from the internet, every day. I’m who you’re talking about. Let me inform you what it’s like: - Old white conservatives being racist - Business owners being racist - Conspiracy theories taken seriously

I can’t fathom why you believe that the internet and offline are two separate existences. I’ve been told to my face in public in a rural town that the KKK needs to make a comeback to deal with “the black problem” in a town that’s 98.7% white.

This is all true. And yet, I think of my upper-middle class friend in a mostly-white suburb of Buffalo who is raising two black boys on her own. Both sons deal with an incredible amount of racist bullying, to the point where the older one is pulling his hair out. 1/

This is an anecdote; her kids *do* survive & thrive; they aren't stuck in the generational poverty afflicting some communities. They smile, are gracious. Everything is "fine," even though it is not. Probing this, looking beyond appearances, is the stuff of real journalism 2/
