I can’t fathom why you believe that the internet and offline are two separate existences. I’ve been told to my face in public in a rural town that the KKK needs to make a comeback to deal with “the black problem” in a town that’s 98.7% white.

This is all true. And yet, I think of my upper-middle class friend in a mostly-white suburb of Buffalo who is raising two black boys on her own. Both sons deal with an incredible amount of racist bullying, to the point where the older one is pulling his hair out. 1/

This is an anecdote; her kids *do* survive & thrive; they aren't stuck in the generational poverty afflicting some communities. They smile, are gracious. Everything is "fine," even though it is not. Probing this, looking beyond appearances, is the stuff of real journalism 2/
