My mom used to make mince meat cookies cookies. I have no idea what in the hell was in them, but, man, they were great ! (ps............I'm old)
At our family Thanksgiving dinner, we always had two pumpkin pies and one mincemeat pie. I loved both.
My brother and I have late November birthdays and one of us landed on Thanksgiving every other year or so. We grew up thinking a birthday cake was a single candle in the middle of a pumpkin pie!
My birthday lands on Thanksgiving about every four years. Lol

Better then or better now? Traditionally, it was venison that was used.
I ate lots of real mince meat pies made from venison...Pennsylvania Dutch family.
Yum.
Some mince meat pie still has meat in it (usually beef). The quality of cut may vary, but it's run through a table-top grinder and also includes fruits and nuts. It can be sweet but usually isn't overwhelmingly so. Used to be a Thanksgiving/Christmas tradition in our family.
Then it should be called mince nut pie
Yeah, that’s true. A little bit of suet. So, I’m not sure “better” would be my take on that version!
and you know what they say about Dutch treat? IT'S NO TREAT AT ALL!
Just like California.
