...ppl are asked questions like: "I agree/disagree with US policy on Syria" -- but I would bet most of us couldn't accurately state what the policy is. So is it an accurate measure of anything real?

One big reason many ordinary ppl have lost trust in some media/politicians is campaign to conflate "illegal immigrant" w/ "immigrant." Some try to use the phrases as if synonyms. It's like saying if u don't like burglars, then you don't like invited friends coming into your house

Thank you thank you thank you for giving voice to that! I've so often literally yelled at the TV when they're giving results of some poll with these sappy, vague or overly-broad questions!

I support reforming the system so that if you're here illegally you're deported, period. U want to apply for asylum? Go to a US embassy

Any college biz major who has written a product survey knows how hard it is to get statistically useful info, & how easy it is to skew results. Questions/sampling are hard. When pollsters have narratives they control results b/c that part is easy.

Which is why you have to investigate methodology, which is what Sharyl is doing.

Additional, partisan media spend most time propagating a bias. Then do polls that are nothing more than echo chambers.

Intentionally vague questions like that are used to twist the response to fit any agenda the pollster likes to pursue. That seems a bit too dishonest for most Americans and leads to unclear information.

I believe the term "our broken immigration system" as they mean it is a canard. We have nearly 50 million immigrants living in the US, 5 times more than the nearest country. We accept a million plus per year. That is a massive processing effort. Sounds like we do a hell of a job.

Questions are purposely vague so they can be used to support whatever position the polling agency or client wants. Polls are not taken to gauge opinion but to sway opinion after the fact.

Yes and most people who have not taken college level stat classes are unaware of how the questions themselves can indeed make polls lean one way or the other. It’s not just about the sample sizes.

Same thing for “do you think Mueller should hurry up and end his investigation?” Half the people would say yes to exonerate Trump and the othe half to hurry him out of office.
