I share the concern but your friends and family are already paying--just through a middleman who takes a big cut. Isn't the real problem the overinflated costs of medicine/care (enabled by our govt "negotiations")-- not how the overinflated costs are spread out?https://twitter.com/SenSanders/status/1027212917463310336 …

Aren't the overinflated costs more due to private insurance and hospitals colluding? Ohj got an EOB from my private insurance once and was thrilled that I didn't pay $12 for a single ibuprofen. But my insurance did. Is that ultra- inflated cost due to the govt?

It's my understanding (maybe an oversimplification) that the high prices are possible because government-negotiated prices under Medicare set the market price for everyone else. And govt. gets lobbied by and agrees to generously pay LOTS our tax $ for these things.

So private, for-profit insurance companies lobby the government to set the prices. So we either have to shut down the lobbying or get politicians that refuse to sell out to them, correct?

Let me jump in: From an economics perspective, the market sets prices. Government sets maximum prices (too high) but the prices could be lower. A true “free market” means *we* (the “market”) are free to enter or leave the marketplace (the sellers) at will. 1/

TVs are a good example of a free market not just because there’s competition, but because we can say “no” to *all* TVs. “No” is necessary for any true free market, not just competition. If you’re sick, or injured, you can’t really say “no”. You’re a captive market. 2/

Medical care, including medicine, is a necessity at the point you become sick or injured. Anything that is a necessity cannot possibly be a “free market” because, like all true necessities, you can’t say no. And captive markets lead to higher costs for lower quality. 3/

If you have leukemia and the hospitals say “that’ll be $800,000 or you die” you have no real choice but to find a way to pay. That’s not “good business” it’s theft. No different than being robbed at gunpoint at the ATM. “Give us your money or you die” is robbery. 4/

Anything the Government has thier hands in gets skimmed without competing entities and depending on Government controls it only means more special interest money in the pockets of the politicians making the decision for the vendors

People expect health insurance to cover every little thing. Car insurance doesn't cover oil changes or tires. Homeowners policies don't pay for lawn maintenance or your utilities.

"Preexisting conditions" is a vexed term: it means different things in different contexts, and different arguments. E.g. it covers the vicious case of someone who waits until they get ill to buy insurance to cover that illness. That case cannot be handled under insurance. 1/2

But it also covers the case of someone who moves from one insurer or plan to another, and that has been adequately covered under "continuous coverage". There is also the case of someone who develops an illness that their insurance company determines had a genetic component. 2/2

ACA was never intended to work. It was a placeholder for single payer assuming Hillary would win. Wrong and wrong! Lots of people in this country choose jobs with benefits in order to have good healthcare. Those choices are rarely for the job they love.

Anyone know a poor Dr? How is it that we make #physicians rich and no one cares that they are doing this on the backs of our sick? I don't begrudge them a #healthy #profit but. Drug companies are no better asking patents to pay insaine prices for experimental drugs w/no garentees

Healthcare is expensive no matter how you spin it! Personnel in medical field are paid very well & for good reason! Companies that produce equipment/supplies/technology maybe charge a bit too much but they have people to pay too! Doctors, of course, are paid well.....
