There was a WSJ piece a few years back about college kids' abuse of ritalin as it enhances "focus". I wonder if the students even researched the contraindications.

There’s extreme difference between ADD,being bi-polar, having Tourettes etc. each case is it’s own case.Parents need to educate themselves & decide which is more important, the risk of the behavior or the risk of the side effects. Not all children learn alike but r taught alike.

Please, enough with the hyperbolic, blanket statements about medications from people not educated in medicine. You’re doing more harm than good. Please (actually) educate yourself before causing more harm. Like anything, they work well (often life saving) when given correctly.

I am fortunate so far in my life. I take no medication other then an aspirin on rare occasions. Side effects are scary but I don't know if you can ever get around that dilemma. You just have to use caution.

Agree, but big pharma doesn’t make near as much money CURING diseases as they do TREATING diseases.

And children with Autism and ADHD don't metabolize ADHD medication differently.
-
Interesting fact!! All medications have side effects. Mind altering drugs like Ritalin and anti psychotics often have adverse effects on young, developing brains.
-
But I am saying that ADHD medication does the opposite of what it is supposed to do if the children are Autistic. I give my son Zoloft and he is Autistic and ADHD and I saw a huge difference in him within weeks. I never gave him any ADHD medication.
-
I understand that. Years ago a cousin who was dx as hyperkinetic..ADD was given coffee to calm him down.
-
Because it has the opposite effect on true hyeract people, because people can have attention deficit without hyperactivity.

Sorry but Risperdal is not indicated/commonly used for ADHD; it is used with bipolar, autism, schizophrenia, etc. Your article states it was used for a child with Tourette’s.

If you have a child that is
#ADD, look into the Feingold diet. It's free from artificial flavors, colors & preservatives. It does work for the vast majority.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

You know what happened when I had difficulty paying attention? My mom slapped my head and said “PAY ATTENTION!” She repeated that as needed until I *learned* mental discipline, something kids actually need to be taught rather than medicated into.
