I don’t know. In certain instances, I tend to agree with this assessment: “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words do permanent damage.” - Eric Bogosian, from the film, Talk Radio

I hear you. I mean for example screaming horrible demeaning things at a young child over and over is harmful. So there are exceptions to that "rule."

I've always had issue with that gem. It's good in it's intent. But it's really a lie. Words of others shape us, and can even scar us, just as our words can others. I try to teach my kids that they are going to hurt, bad, at times, grow stronger from it so it isn't wasted pain.
-
I don't think it's a "lie" --I think there are just exceptions but generally a helpful "rule" to keep in mind. And you're right, strength can emerge from pain!

Names did a pretty good job of nearly destroying Robert Bork and the security guard from the Atlanta Olympics.
-
I get your point but I don't think they were nearly destroyed because someone called them names... it was a lot more complex than that and involved media coverage and behavior etc.
-
The media coverage amplified the names, accusations and innuendos.

Sharyl, I always relate a discussion that I heard in February 2017 on Long Island between a pro-Trump supporter and Democrat....It was civil, there was disagreement, but the conversation never deviated to a disrespectful level. Nowadays, this doesnt exist. That is a sad fact

Words only have the value and weight we give them. If we give them nothing, they're worth nothing.

Here’s the problem: When is a word more than a word? According to the alt-left, it is by no means inappropriate to respond to some words, those most wounding to the alt-left, by violent means. That is the basic rational of Antifa brown-shirts.

Very true. Unfortunately, the left has begun to promote the sticks & stones path.
