You need at least a catastrophic high deductible plan to cover hospitalizations, in addition to either plan you discussed in your piece.

(I think I mentioned that three of the patients profiled still have regular insurance...)

Contact lenses cost pennies to make and yet they charge a lot of money.

Such a promising article, especially for people who are generally healthy and only occasionally visited with a medical problem requiring care by a physician.

Isn't going to get better any time soon as long as we rely on third party payer.

Sure about what the insurance co paid? Bet the ins co didn't pay the price you saw. Personal experience: wife's knee surgery coded improperly and was denied by ins co, bill came to us +$100k in total......once the error was fixed insurance co accepted, paid under $14k in total

And if INSURANCE will fall for that one, you can imagine who gets drilled when Medicare/Medicaid gets a bill like that.

There are some independent doctors that will hook you up. I think some of those $100 tests are under $5. The medical industry runs on extortion. Med ins is like liability, which buys legal protection.

I've been in practice for 21 years, have never taken insurance. PS - I find the grey text on your site very hard to read.

The price charged and the price paid by insurance companies can be a 10 to 1 ratio. I received a 100k hospital bill that medicare paid 10k.

Do you think that government-established Medicare & Medicaid was the genesis of today’s health insurance companies? My 79 year old mom said she grew up paying doctors & hospital bills (for births, surgeries, etc) out of their pockets- and the bills weren’t exhorbitant.
-
There used to be charity hospitals. They have been taken over by high priced bureaucrats who make more the more they spend. Mom said private room in 1960 was $20. Bet a box of Kleenex wasn't $20 either.

OKC surgical Center will do an everything included gallbladder today for about what UT Southwestern billed me in 2005 for interns to do the surgery. The surgeons were minimal compared to the facility charges, which are included at OK
