  1. So happy for Candice and Vanderbilt. Honestly, I was very disappointed that she wasn't named to the position the other year. Better late than never. ! A proud Commodore and parent of a Commadore here!

  2. I almost left academia as a postdoc due to financial concerns. I was a postdoc when they weren't paid well. I had made phone calls and sent emails to grad school classmates at GE and Phillips because I was tired of being broke. My postdoc advisor saved me

Happy 107th Birthday, Rosa Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005)!🎈 An organizer, civil rights activist, sexual assault investigator & more, Parks is widely known for her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama us on December 1, 1955.

Hey. Can I get the same amount of outrage over America's lack of clean water as some of ya'll have over the Super Bowl halftime performance, please. Then can we focus all that energy on helping me bring clean water to those in need?

  5. My post was about Rosa Parks and I didn't even know it was her birthday. What a coincidence.

  6. It turns out that investigating these rapes was personal. She experienced an attempted rape but was able to get away. How many women who worked as maids and cooks were raped? It seems that it was all too common. The sad thing is there is likely no data.

  7. and reduces her to a one dimensional character. She was deeply involved in the movement and the bus boycott wasn't spontaneous. She was trained. She also did work investigating sex crimes against black women perpetrated by white men. Recy Taylor's assault wasn't the first.

  8. Rosa Parks is connected to my hometown. She and her father were born in Abbeville, AL. Her family knew mine as they were black landowners. The mythic characterization of Mrs. Parks in a lot of ways downplays her role in the civil rights movement

Let me be clear, if Roberts so much as BREATHES on Ruth Bader Ginsburg this week, I want him brought up on attempted murder charges.

is not alone. This wasn't a one off in the small town I'm from. The small town I'm from isn't a one off in America. One question I'm wrestling with now is how has this history of sexual trauma impacted me and how is it impacting my daughter?

I can't imagine what the wife in this household thought when a little girl who worked for her turned up pregnant. I can't imagine what she thought when she finally saw that little mulatto baby that looked like her husband. How she rationalized it is beyond me. But my aunt Lottie

Ella Fran and Lottie continued to work for this family and Lottie continued being sexually assaulted. I can't imagine being in this situation. I can't imaging how Ella Fran made that work in her head. I can't imagine how Lottie felt and the type of psychological damage caused.

Well, given the topic I told you I was focusing on this year I'm sure you know what happened. Lottie was raped. She ended up having a baby boy all before she even had her first period. And yes, because of the peculiar financial situation and because the man was white with power

she was old enough her mother would send her to clean after dinner. One day she told her mother that the man of the house tried to touch her. Her mother dismissed it, not being able to imagine that he would do such a thing especially given Lottie's age.

Lottie and Lula Mae's mother, Ella Fran, was a single working mother. She cooked and cleaned for a prominent white family. She would get up early and go cook breakfast, clean, cook lunch and dinner. Lottie was a young girl and would go and help her mother and when

My great grandmother, Lula Mae (Cassidy) Newman had 2 sisters, Lottie and Helen. It turns out that Lula Mae was the lucky one. I'm going to tell you a little about Lottie's early life and a particular experience that shaped her entire life.
