What might "herd immunity" in the UK actually mean in numbers. An explainer.pic.twitter.com/qVesmBZK1a

I thought the concept of herd immunity referred to vaccination as opposed to infection? As in, the immunity that the herd have, protects the more vulnerable.. Would what they're going for not be more accurately described as widespread infection?

It's both. Herd immunity existed long before vaccines, it's just that sensible countries only do herd immunity through vaccines these days. I'll take inoculation over infection any day!

Yeah, but the pre inoculation herd immunity involved sacrificing people.. Presumably why we opt for vaccines these days instead..

It's both. Vaccination simulates the disease to provide immunity. But there is no evidence that you are immune to this one after you've had it. In fact there is anecdotal evidence from China that you can get it again.

It's like the old days when our parents used to send us to chicken pox parties. Only this time there's a side of death

There’s no vaccine. It might take a year.

Or 18 months... I don't think purposeful infection is going to help on any level however..
