There is therefore a significant delta between the emerging EU regulatory system, some but not all of which I have mentioned (you could also include the emerging tech doctrine) where the UK could position itself, provided it has the regulatory autonomy to do so.

Especially in areas like data, chemicals, SPS, other TBT compares with developed, historically open economies. As we will see in the WTO SPS meetings in March, or the ongoing fish subsidies negotiations, the EU is becoming increasingly isolated on these issues.

My point was not whether the EU has an open trading system compared with the rest of the world including developing countries who have typically closed markets but rather how the the totality of EU policies including th CET and the direction of travel of its regulatory system

“The people who will suffer most if we don’t have a good trading relationship between the EU and the UK will be those European car manufacturers who will lose preferential access to our market. “We must stop thinking of ourselves as supplicants.“

Fantastic to see so many MPs at the launch of the Free Trade Caucus co-chaired by and It's wonderful to see colleagues rising to the challenge of advancing "God's diplomacy" as Cobden said and reminded us Time to stand and lead

Proud to be a founding member of the Free Trade Parliamentary Caucus today. Thx to Greg Hands & Suella Braverman, inaugural co-chairs, & Shanker Singham for a superb presentation. If we care about global living standards we must embrace free trade.

A wonderful warm welcome as we move to our seat next to the US in the WTO. The Americans are some of the toughest negotiators in the world. But the bonds run deep.

“We start off with zero tariffs and zero quantitative restrictions - we'd like to preserve that for trade to flow... But what you can't have is market access for regulatory identicality, or regulatory harmonisation. The EU is very much an outlier on that point”

Hearing a lot of reactions like this. It is based on the assumption that the EU is itself a beacon of free trade. Reality is the Customs Union has very high tariff walls and the regulation is rapidly becoming less not more competitive.

Yes, this is why we have to be crystal clear that we will have our own anti subsidy disciplines and we will not lower labour and environmental standards purely for trade advantage but we cannot do so through alignment to EU regs. Not sure after six months, EU still does not get.
