NEW: Democrats say new DNC debate rules are forcing them to distort their 2020 campaigns to get 130k donors. Vendors are now quoting $40 and $50 to “acquire” ONE new $1 donor. A flood of money to Facebook just as Ds complain about the tech giant...https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …

Some math: Let’s say a smaller campaign can get 100,000 donors organically but has to advertise to hit 130,000. At $40 a pop, that’s $1.2 million.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …

Digital Dem pros are fretting about the impact down ballot where House and Senate candidates with low name ID are priced out of the small donor acquisition markethttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …

Overlooked: Jay Inslee’s super PAC spent $400k on Facebook ads directing sign ups to the official campaign. The ads stopped when Inslee announced he had hit 50k donors. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …pic.twitter.com/F068hhICpe

Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke and Joe Biden are safe on donor metric. Everyone else? Probably going be spending $$$ they wouldn’t otherwise on donor acquisition.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …

The donor thresholds have become, for the bottom tier, a major message. The day he announce Seth Moulton's campaign asked their finance committee to join "Operation 65k" complete with a logo and sample tweets/emails https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/politics/democratic-debate-rules.html …pic.twitter.com/AEMV8PnOUh

Question: haven't the top 5 candidates already reached the new donor threshold?

Four have reached. Two almost surely (Biden and Beto). Which leaves two-thirds of field short.

        Consultants make too much money.

This is true, but the consultants are only 15% or so of that cost (the retainers are negligible in the scheme of things and that cost goes to not more than ads). The high cost is because 23 candidates are trying to get roughly the same universe to donate. Feeds are saturated.
