One day I’ll write a book, covering how narratives shape what we see, who we are, our actions, and how to change them.

As a parent, the most important narrative you create is the one your child will probably still tell themselves as an adult...

A powerful statement, I try to parent by: the way you talk to your kids will shape the voice in their head for the rest of their lifes.

"All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts;"

Foucault's work seems particulary relevant here as well. The masks we wear have both an internal and external impact.

Interesting. I just started to think that a well-lived life is about letting go of narrative. Seeing clearly what is underneath narrative, conditioning, unconscious patterns. Designing a narrative seems inauthentic by definition.

I agree with your sentiment, but no one can be truly objective in practice. We are all bound to our single perspective and that itself, our past, our current self-image, our images of the future, are what I'd call a narrative here. Everything is a frame of reference.

Why would anyone want to “change” someone else’s behaviour?

To gain benefits, or to avoid costs.

Drake's book "Narrative Coaching" dives deep into this; in both the theory and practice.
