An updated version of our ( and ) work on the factors affecting the performance of polygenic scores--beyond genetic ancestry—is accepted and now up [thread]

Interesting: ball heading in soccer is associated with poor cognitive performance only in APOE e4 carriers.

That was one of the most interesting talks in the recent ASHG.

Streets all quiet today - can't thank enough our beloved eternal prime minister Netanyahu for shutting down the entire city of Jerusalem for his election propaganda.

Very cool study of dietary habits in the deeply phenotyped BioBank Japan (n=165k).

I've written an NIH biosketch for the first time in two years (I don't usually apply to their grants). Glad to report that a lot has changed. But it took SO long and is SO annoying. Does anyone ever read the "Contribution to Science"? What's wrong with top 10 relevant papers?

Twin study and GWAS of potato chips preference (seriously!) Small study but seems solid. Dietary fat perception is variable across people, but is not yet resolved. h^2=10-30%. Wondering what in my genetics makes me dislike potato chips.

Latest paper from our group -- review of new methods for inferring positive selection, led by Hussein Hejase and (sorry, paywall).

A method for improving local ancestry inference using pedigree information. (I.e., detecting and fixing inconsistency in estimated ancestry across relatives.) In simulations, errors down by 50%. and others.

A hypothesis in Science: people with chronic diseases are infectious, as bacteria from "dysbiotic" (altered) gut microbiome can be transmitted to others and cause disease. Wondering what people think. Plausible or unnecessary stigmatization?

Evaluating the accuracy of education polygenic scores in Hungary. "We replicated previous Estonian findings about increased PGS heritability after the fall of Communism". Cool.

For height and BMI, they concluded that ~2/3 of the reduction in accuracy in Africans is due differences in allele frequency and LD, and the rest is due to differences in heritability and effect sizes. In Asians, frequency+LD explain ~1/3 of the risk reduction. 2/2

It is known that polygenic scores are far less accurate in non-European populations. New paper from Loic Yengo et al derived a formula to quantify the reduction in accuracy and dissected the contribution of the possible causes. 1/2

I really enjoyed reading this. Very well written explanation of the GWAS on the "non-cognitive" contribution to educational attainment. Clear description of the motivation, key results, implications, and pitfalls.

This is potentially very useful, allowing the PBWT data structure to change dynamically with continuous data collection.

Can report that these illustrations were spectacularly successful! Made the rest of the lesson much easier.

When did Anatomically Modern Humans migrate out of Africa? A palaeoclimatic analysis suggests a few windows during the past 300ky. The migration that left descendants (~60kya) was likely through the Southern (Arabian) route.

This is amazing. Perfect timing as I am teaching this tomorrow! Curious whether the students will like it.
