Thread on violence & impact on civilians:
Elders from Laghman reached out to @AfghanistanIHRC sharing reports of airstrikes, rocket attacks , displacement, civilians caught in the crossfire. This is happening in multiple provinces across Af & a sense of helplessness is growing.https://twitter.com/AfghanistanIHRC/status/1397428132865478658 …

As violence has escalated, so has harm to civilians. Entire villages & communities are displaced. People are in mourning AND have to be on the move. Additionally, ongoing violence makes it harder to fully document & verify civilian losses.

Afghans on both sides, Taliban & Republic, could be taking steps to stop the suffering. Taliban are primarily responsible for the harm by not agreeing to a ceasefire & meaningful talks. Republic is struggling to exhibit much needed unity & cohesion.

There is talk of commitment to Afghans from international community, yet confusing signals are sent to Afghan public every day. As always, priority & messaging is for domestic populations, but there needs to a real acknowledgement of responsibility towards this war &the suffering

Afghans r dying in war every day. Both sides are focused on making "progress" in the battlefield. If this goes on, tactics will get uglier & violations WILL increase. The world seems resigned to this. That is not acceptable. The world, including the UN, needs to do more & better.
