Our current situation is not fair & what is ahead will not be easy. Many clear-eyed assessments foresee the worst: a civil war. Can it still be prevented? Yes. It will require political maturity & unity from our political elite & real commitment to talks from Taliban.

We are right to be afraid as we have not seen either before. There is also fear because the space for public engagement has shrunk due to TB violence. In absence of close engagement of international community, there is fear that this space will shrink further by TB,strongmen+gov

Neither the current state of peace talks nor the withdrawal mitigate these fears. We have been left with a mess that was collectively created, but we Afghans have to mostly sort out on our own. Whether we feel relief due to withdrawal or concern & fear, d path ahead is not easy.

What can we Afghans do in the meantime? Continue to push for meaningful peace talks. Push the gov & political elite to be better & do better. Continue to protect & expand civic space in the face of new threats. Advocate for security, development & humanitarian assistance.

For years now, in capitals outside Afg, I heard about “international fatigue” re Afg. No one is more exhausted than ordinary Afg. Living & dying by arbitrary deadlines, experiencing all forms of violence, depending on aid for our existence.

To overcome this exhaustion & find some relief, we Afghans have to work much harder & longer. We have to strive to end the war & overcome divides & wounds, we have to learn to live together in mutual acceptance & dignity, we have to show that we don’t descend to chaos on our own.

Thanks@shaharzadAkbar, its certainly the right things to follow-but we all have missed two decades for taking such steps, and there were few they were attentive to the ground realities.

Unfortunately, now it’s very similar to the famous proverb Afghans have said (روز جنگ اسپ چاق نمیشه) but still I hope all groups have learned from the past and the poor nation won’t see a chaos of 90s again!!!

Great analysis, but d proposed solution is not adequate when the country falling in d CW. The clock is 5 over 12 and the urgency requiring courage & political risks from young educated Afghans incl. you to stand up against Ghani before d Taliban have not taken d complete control.
