@AfghanistanIHRC Gardez office was set up to cover Paktia, Paktika & Khost. With increased insecurity, we have limited access. One objective 4 d visits is to brainstorm solutions to d access problem & regain ability to monitor human rights across our areas of coverage.
In Gardez, we were welcomed with generosity & warmth by colleagues, civil society & local government leadership. Discussions were frank & concise, there was shared recognition of human rights issues & a spirit of collaboration to overcome them.pic.twitter.com/sB0fUMXT2D
Civil society colleagues raised a range of issues from poverty, access to health & education, violence against women & rights of people with disability to transitional justice, civilian casualties & the plight of the internally displaced population.pic.twitter.com/igqawJo7kq
Some key demands: All sides working to end the war, increased services for a growing population, women’s protection center, funding 4 independent media, women’s education & leadership, better access to information (4 media), @AfghanistanIHRC supporting Af detainees with Taliban
I came back from d short trip energized. Every trip is a reminder of the diversity of Af, the importance of recognizing local priorities & investing on local solutions. Human rights are universal, but every community has its own unique challenges & strategies & language 4 rights.
