Came back re-energized from a road trip 2 Ningarhar dis evening. Despite the challenges,each trip to provinces reminds me that I am where I need 2 be & I am striving 2 do what I should be doing. Human rights work is essential 4 present & future of Af & has allies across d country

Civilian casulalities, restrictions on freedom of expression, women’s lack of access to jobs & opportunities & barriers to girls’ & women’s education in districts as well issues of poverty, drug abuse & mafia networks came up repeatedly in discussions.

There was also talk of improvements in security, a growing cadre of women university students & teachers & outspoken women’s rights activists, some of whom we had the honor of meeting.

As we drove back in the evening in the shadow of the majestic mountains, awed by their quiet confidence, I thought of the suffering of our people, but also that suffering does not have to be endless. It can & must end. We all deserve a better society & a brighter future.
