I taught Introduction to Gender for the 2nd time in @AUAfghanistan this semester. Every session was a powerful reminder of hope, the potential of Afghan youth and the thirst for learning.
My students (25 young women & men) rewrote Afghan & Western fairy tales imagining a gender equal world, they analyzed Afghan weddings songs from a gender perspective, wrote about "gendered brain", and explored topics such as bachabazi, marital rape & gender & Afghan media.
We made a promise early in the class to create a safe & judgement free space for discussion, to honor academic freedom, to commit to learning & also unlearning, and the students, all from different parts of Af & different backgrounds, delivered on the promise.
We learned about gender, but also, I hope, about our own biases, and also learned to be a bit more emphatic, a bit more tolerant & a bit more imaginative. I was amazed by the students' curiosity, commitment, courage & agility.
The news about possibility of @AUAfghanistan shutdown is heartbreaking, not because it will shatter the dreams of so many young Afgs, but also because it will signal indifference or despair. There r many private universities in Af but @AUAfghanistan draws some of the best talent
@AUAfghanistan must become sustainable & a stronger institution. It is already on that path with hiring more Afghan faculty & improving quality of teaching, as well as internal reforms. It should be supported in dis transition because investing on education is investing on peace.

Intro to Gender was the best class. It was an amazing experience. I understood that many things that seem to be normal in our lives are not normal and have to be changed. And vice versa. Many thanks to you Professor!
