Following #HSD8, spent today in Herat listening to civil society & @AfghanistanIHRC colleagues. I also met Governor @quayom_rahimi to discuss the human rights situation in the province.
Civil Society Organizations & activists in Herat r diverse, strong & committed. They shared views on a range f issues from civilian protection, violence against women & gender stereotypes n curriculum, to rights of displaced & deported children, & their views on peace process.
They want @AfghanistanIHRC to engage more systematically with the civil society, which we are committed to, & they requested @AfghanistanIHRC leadership on issues of citizen's rights & d peace process, as well as transitional justice & advocacy 4 Human Rights Defenders.
I was energized by d commitment of d civil society & media, & d courage & commitment of my @AfghanistanIHRC colleagues, while also feeling the immensity of our responsibility at this uncertain time & the long-term implications of our work for d youth & children of Afghanistan.
