When I woke up from a night of little & poor sleep yesterday, I had an anxious knot in my stomach, worrying about security, specially 4 my @AfghanistanIHRC colleagues observing d elections across Af. I hugged my son extra tight as I left d house, mentally prepared 4 d worst

I was thus inspired all day, by our security forces, by women who voted holding their babies, by voters with disabilities, by everyone who participated despite direct Taliban threat, despite d lack of support 4 elections & d general negative discourse preceding E day.

Turnout could be higher. The process could be smoother. But the security arrangements, d relative responsiveness of IEC & above of all, d courage of Afg voters, observers & media made yesterday historic & inspiring.

The process was smoother. How smoother do you want it to be? Even though for those who didn’t have their names on the list were still asked to vote but instead they were venting their frustration for attention on social media.

There was no lack of support for the elections by those who believed in democracy. As for those looking for anarchy and instability, looking for asylums and foreign passports, proselytizing, had their share of ranting everywhere. The elections proved inferiors like these wrong

Exaggerating fear by some of the candidates who were former warlords wanted the process to get derailed. They were waiting for international committee to intervene again and stifle the process again. It’s a shame for people who lived in the safest province and yet 50% voted

You better ask those people from the safest province where 50% turned out to vote? Were they special from all those who had their fingers chopped off and walked miles to vote? What makes them different and special than others? Killing innocent Syrians is justified but not voting?

Showing their abstinence from voting to draw attention from international media to get asylums again? I voted in Kandahar, I saw a widow with a disabled kid vote. Her integrity and love for her country was above all those who abstained.

Moved that Afghans continue to bravely vote 4 self-determination, & inspired by Shaharzad Akbar's clear seeing coupled with compassion & optimism!
