Today was the beginning of my second week with @AfghanistanIHRC and I am yet to respond to many kind & humbling congratulatory messages. I am moved by d support. The alliance for human rights agenda needs 2 be expanded & all encouragement & support is a source of hope & strength.

Today, I met another group of my personal heroes: women in media. Afg women in media have to fight on several fronts every day: social pressure, difficult & unsupportive work environments & insecurity. Afg women in media are a symbol of the progress made & challenges that remain.

I also listened to our colleagues in Kabul and heads of our offices in Faryab, Helmand, Badakhshan & Gardez. Their spirit of activism despite d shrinking space inspired me & reminded me that human rights activism has a long (pre 2001) history in Af & will continue 4 years to come

@US4AfghanPeace was uncertainty about future. There is concern about a return 2 tyranny or chaos or serious setbacks 4 rights & freedoms. A rushed process might deliver a settlement but peace requires long term work.Show this thread
