Today was the beginning of my second week with @AfghanistanIHRC and I am yet to respond to many kind & humbling congratulatory messages. I am moved by d support. The alliance for human rights agenda needs 2 be expanded & all encouragement & support is a source of hope & strength.
My colleagues and I face d enormous task of promoting human rights agenda in d time of conflict & broadening d alliance by engaging more Afgs, specially youth. We also have 2 work 2 further strengthen d organization in a time of uncertainty about the future of human rights in Af
In a meeting with @ppmafghan in @AfghanistanIHRC , I was reminded of d unbearable cost of dis war & d grave human rights violations caused by it, from lack of access to security & movement 2 recruitment f children as fighters. There is no victory in violence, just damage & pain.
I met @AhrdoAfg team to discuss victim-centered approach 2 peace & d obstacles to justice n Afg. As a nation, we r burdened with grievances & a sense of injustice. Lasting peace is not possible without attending to our shared wounds & overcoming d sense of injustice & victimhood.
Today, I met another group of my personal heroes: women in media. Afg women in media have to fight on several fronts every day: social pressure, difficult & unsupportive work environments & insecurity. Afg women in media are a symbol of the progress made & challenges that remain.
I also listened to our colleagues in Kabul and heads of our offices in Faryab, Helmand, Badakhshan & Gardez. Their spirit of activism despite d shrinking space inspired me & reminded me that human rights activism has a long (pre 2001) history in Af & will continue 4 years to come
A main thread in all conversations, including d meeting with @US4AfghanPeace was uncertainty about future. There is concern about a return 2 tyranny or chaos or serious setbacks 4 rights & freedoms. A rushed process might deliver a settlement but peace requires long term work.
Over the last 18 years d existence of @AfghanistanIHRC was merely a symbolic icon & dysfunctional. I hope under your responsibility you bring a drastic reforms in policies and make it functional that could deliver tangible services to the ppl.
Da first & most important job of Afg HRC should be condemning d barbarism of US forces in d name of fighting terrorism in AFG while rewarding d epicentre of terrorism Pakistan with $billions & state visits. Till US forces r not condemned, terrorists will continue their barbarism
