I do really respect his thought, however, I may argue that in order to avoid same tragedies, at least we can genuinely try for even “impossible” things.
Then you may need to have that conversation with him and others who share that view. I think an end to war is difficult, but possible. Peace though will depend on how much Taliban realize that they can’t/don’t have monopoly on what is Islamic or what is right for Afghans.
