The Center included testimonies & stories of victims of the past 40 years of war, including victims of Taliban & victims of Afghan gov and International Military attacks. Everyone who has ruled Afg in d past 40 years, has been involved n killing Afgs, to different scales.
We have never had a collective opportunity 4 justice or healing. Wounds have accumulated & gotten deeper. Victims’ stories & experiences remain at d margins of discussions about past & future.
As we discuss peace, we as a nation may decide 2 forgive & move forward, or decide to deal with our past using a transitional justice mechanism, but that decision is not for politicians 2 make. We can’t forgive on behalf of others. Victims’ voices should be part of d process.
I was disappointed today 2 not see the members of gov’s negotiation team among d audience. Both gov & Taliban negotiation team need to engage with victims’ families, hear their voices & demands & consider them.
In the meantime, the work of #acmd needs 2 expand & grow. We need to document, remember & honor the lives lost & destroyed. We need 2 acknowledge the pain & wounds of our society 2 move forward. We need our history retold as by victims & ordinary Afs, not just d warring parties.
