I attended a poetry reading & Performance Art event today in Kabul University where poets, artists & university students had gathered to celebrate life, beauty & freedom.
The event also paid tribute to Samim Faramarz, young Afghan journalist, who was killed in a suicide attack along with other journalists in 2018 & an artist who was killed due to injuries endured n a suicide attack during a theatre performance in Isteqlal High School.
The hall was packed with young women & men n a cold winter afternoon. As the poet Ramin Mazhar recited poetry on war, love & defying traditions, the energy in d room was electrifying. His recital was followed by live music.
Sitting there, surrounded by youth, listening 2 those words of rebellion & defiance saying no 2 tyranny,violence & restrictive social norms,paying tribute 2 d stars we lost, I felt emotional & overwhelmed by how little our youth have & how big & brave their dreams & aspirations r
The speeches & peotey brought forth the shared anxiety about an uncertain future & d interplay of hope & fear that is burdening our hearts. Fears were shared that we will not be able to preserve d little space we have for creativity, rebellion, literature & music.
It broke my heart sensing that anxiety & fear. I was reminded how even when my parents were young, their generation had to endure censor & oppresion. When will we break this vicious circle where we have to start our struggle for dignified life from scratch every few decades?
YOU are the future. Attend more readings and performance events and write about them. Beauty, art and goodness will eventually overcome oppression and aggression. #freedom # peace #Afghanistan
