Freedom of movement must be respected. No armed groups who assume authority through violence should prevent citizens from legitimate right to travel and access to airport. People will judge on actions not words.

Planes are leaving largely empty. The international community must secure access to the airport for those who want to leave or who are at risk if they stay.

  6. On Taliban & women rights: important to remain focused on legal rights and next steps for existing legal rights of women. That should be the baseline. Behavior/practice can change overnight & tends to be context specific/varied by province, local “authorities” etc

  12. Messaging and coordination is so important. People at high risk are stuck in Kabul while reports about plane leaving almost empty. Not acceptable. Irresponsible withdrawal is followed by messy evacuation leading to tragedy. The US & others can do better

  13. Some ideas on support to Afghanistan: 1) Airport security, clear messaging and coordination. Airport needs to be secured, not just for evacuation of foreigners but with a view to medium, long term to also mediate the current rush that is causing suffering, indignity

I know what happens when the world loses sight of women & girls in crises. When it looks away, war is waged on women’s bodies. This must not happen in . The international community must act so that the Taliban doesn't continue to rob women of their rights & freedoms.

We will never, ever be able to match the courage and bravery of Afghan women. None of us. And certainly not the leaders who dragged on a war in their name, showed little sincere commitment beyond token representation, and then left them to fight for their place through a fire

It is heartbreaking and deeply shameful to watch how the world has completely failed the people in Afghanistan. It is impossible to imagine the situation they - especially women and children - now face.
