I'm really torn between two warring concepts here 1) sending a hate mob to storm the halls of government to overturn a fair election is the most insane thing that's ever happened, and it should change minds 2) this was obviously who he always was, and it shouldn't change minds

I suspect it's got to do with who the tipping point happened to. Depressing as it is, most of his previous atrocities were directed at people and institutions that don't represent the idea of America the way "sending a terrorist militia to storm the capitol is."

Like... latino children dying in concentration camps, black people and protestors murdered by cops, pocketing millions in tax money: a lot of people can file those away under "the way it's always been" because there's been decades of propaganda work on justifying them.
