Well yeah, that becomes obvious, even on initial viewings. Pretty much everyone involved doesn't want to actually punish Kris, it's just that the prosecutor & judge have jobs to do. They even have scenes pointing this out while explicitly saying they like Kris.

it's so weird that people don't talk about this, it's the funniest part of the movie to me, they play it like it's this brilliant legal move but we know all about the many thumbs on the scale
