On November 14th 2019, 1200+ neuroscientists petitioned the Society for Neuroscience leadership to address the and our community’s role in responding. We are still looking waiting for a promised response and plan of action from SfN.

Neuroscientists have a role to play in tackling the climate emergency. In this preprint, we suggest some actions that everyone in the Neuroscience community can take to reduce emissions.

Kudos to the original petitioners - thank you for pushing the neuroscience field to "lead by example" and others not on Twitter

This was four years ago. The planet is now warmer, CO2 levels are higher, Paris targets nowhere in sight. It's discouraging to see the lack on action and political will has shown. But, it's not too late - let's work together and change our community to decarbonize!

This year, >1200 neuroscientists are petitioning to act on the (). But did you know that already in 2016, leaders of our field demanded a reduction of the annual meeting's footprint? 🌍✈️ Read the original letter here 👇

“The Guardian will no longer accept advertising from oil and gas companies, becoming the first major global news organisation to institute an outright ban on taking money from companies that extract fossil fuels.” A good start, who will take this further?

"How scientists can reduce their carbon footprint" by Nathans & Sterling - required reading for those of us who travel for science, and especially organizers of large meetings. Let's use the to reimagine mtgs.

High CO2 seems to make you stupid (). But our body produces ~1kg of CO2 per day (factor 10 more during physical exercises) while we only breathe in 13kg of air which usually contains (much) less than 1kg of CO2. How can effects be large?

Supporting science-based policy and public understanding of science is a core part of mission. By changing our own emitting behaviors, we will send a strong signal to the public, and other large scientific societies.

We do not wish for SfN conferences to stop. We want them to flourish! needs to start developing solutions that allow us to continue to participate while meeting internationally-agreed emissions reductions standards.

We ask to substantially reduce emissions by greatly expanding virtual access to the conference, changing the size and frequency of the physical meeting, and divest banking from fossil fuels. Read petition here:
