We are devastated to hear that after a lengthy battle with cancer, Carol Leigh, also known as 'The Scarlet Harlot' passed away today.

In her nearly 50 years of activism, Leigh was an artist, author, film maker and revolutionary sex worker rights activist.
She is credited with inventing the term 'sex work', now a fundamental part of the language regarding all workers' rights and agency.

Ultimately, Leigh argued that until sex workers are included in the conversations about feminism, sexuality and legality – conversations from which they have historically been excluded – sex workers will remain fragmented rather than collective, and stigmatisation will abound.
Sex worker organising, advocating and mobilising in the West is in large part due to the groundbreaking work of Carol Leigh, and we will remember her.
