We go backwards: deconstruct wisdom to knowledge, knowledge to facts, facts to data, data to nothingness & despair

I feel like I've shaved at least 10 years off purgatory by not snarking in that thread.

We live in a society that is drenched in music. There is loud sounds everywhere, in every building, in every room, in every restaurant, every bar. The only place it's quiet is the bathroom where you can hear another man's bowel movements with Sonos like headphone precision

This seems like a legit continuation of mix tape-ing. Next question is . . . was there mix-tapeing before read/write cassettes and CDs? What preceded it? (For context: asked a class to think about truly new and novel cultural expressions tied to specific tech)

It *is*! On our second date, my now spouse (who cares greatly about progressive metal) presented me with a carefully composed Spotify playlist to introduce me to the genre. He still makes me playlists for birthdays, road trips, our anniversary, etc.

In my experience, American leftists who think Japan is great because there’s no guns turn a blind eye to the strict immigration laws, while American right-wingers who praise the latter try really hard to ignore the fact that Japan really isn’t that socially conservative. Thread.

"Now, the making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do's and don'ts. First of all you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing."

On their own, Spotify playlists aren't mix tapes, I don't think. A mix tape, you make for someone specific and you give it to them specifically, as a gesture of romantic attachment or close friendship. Is it a "thing" to do this with Spotify playlists?

Do kids these days have their new version of a mix tape? Or was mix tape culture a one-time only thing for the cassette/CD generation?

Lorraine Daston, generally being awesome—and reminding us that the social walls we've built between "qualitative" and "quantitative" inquiry are arbitrary and odd.
