Any time they wanted, GOP politicians could just stop ginning up toxic culture war hysteria and simply talk about the legislation they'd like to pass to improve the lives of their constituents. Of course they won't do that. But know that it's a choice they make every day.

I mean, I guess they could talk about the fresh new ideas they came up with for their 2020 platform.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/25/us/politics/republicans-platform.html …

these days it seems like pretty monotone culture wars, but usually the other line of conservative rhetoric is around a never-ending parade of tax-cuts and deregulation for 'job-creation' and 'prosperity'

Republicans have not propsede any meaningful domestic legislation since No Child Left Behind and it sucked. All they have done is tax cuts, dergulation, appoint judges and try to overturn the ACA.

To be fair -- to be fanatically, almost maniacally fair -- *IF* the Democrats were going to turn the U.S. into a Chinese Communist colony, it *would* be reasonable for the GOP to run simply on a "stop the Dems!" platform. It just happens to be the case that this is demented. 1/

But if there *is* a good case to be made that the triumph of one party would be the ruin of democracy -- e.g., if one party had devoted itself to suppressing the votes of their opponents and overthrowing the results they didn't like... then "stop them!" is a rational platform.
