"Over the past quarter century, springing up from the fertile soil of a freedom-loving American people, more than one thousand scattered grass-roots organizations have risen in outspoken protest to the internationalist and left-wing trends in American leadership." --1963

"For this reason, these groups are called 'Rightist.' They are important because they represent ten million militant but disunited idealists who are determined to combat and destroy the subversive twins, Marxist liberalism and internationalism." --1963

Here's a thread with some info on the person behind this directory, Willis Carto, one of the nation's most virulent racists and antisemites whose career spanned from the 1950s into the early 2000s.https://twitter.com/SethCotlar/status/1390371383541075971?s=20 …

        Seth Cotlar added,

        Seth Cotlar @SethCotlar
Carto set up a "Liberty Lobby" in DC. The way he frames the project (Liberty loving patriots vs. un-American special interests) has some real "drain the swamp" energy. This is from September 1957. pic.twitter.com/uz6mFp7PkX

This matters because Carto's newsletter was the most widely circulated right wing periodical in the country in 1966. Far right figures like him reached far more self-described "conservative" readers than the National Review did.https://twitter.com/SethCotlar/status/1392921857414795268?s=20 …

        Seth Cotlar added,

        Seth Cotlar @SethCotlar
This points to a huge problem in our public memory/understanding of the history of conservatism. We generally think 1960s/70s conservatism = Bill Buckley and the National Review. But look at these lists compiled by Group Research. pic.twitter.com/GqQwCnpAnF

Right wing radio was also a crucial part of this story as well, an absolutely ubiquitous feature on the nation's AM radio dials in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is an excellent book on that much overlooked phenomenon.https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Radio_Right/NEfWDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PP1&printsec=frontcover …

An interesting contemporary take on these rightist organizations. "It's ok, they'll never get their act together enough to actually elect one of their own to office."https://twitter.com/LAdailymirror/status/1393620049655570438?s=20 …

Here's Bill Buckley in 1966 defensively trying to distance himself from the contemporary far right, the massive iceberg upon which his fairly small, "respectable" National Review sat. He was fully aware of this, I'd argue.https://twitter.com/SethCotlar/status/1188299485383774209?s=20 …

        Seth Cotlar added,

        Seth Cotlar @SethCotlar
It's stunning how defensive WFB is during this discussion. When the guest points out (correctly) that there were many far right organizations that avidly got behind Goldwater, Buckley insists that Goldwater was supported by the same people as Eisenhower. https://youtu.be/Sb4oQDqpkQ8?t=417 …
