Columnist in the Charlotte Observer, 18 August 1968, regretfully notes that election season is when all of the right wing fear merchants come out, "clothed in red, white, and blue as the self-anointed disciples of patriotism." It's as bad as the days of Father Coughlin, he says.pic.twitter.com/lwR9y4x8nv

These racists and antisemites demagoguing about Communists coming to get your guns rake in $20 million a year from terrified white Americans that they then use to just churn out more fear-mongering propaganda.pic.twitter.com/cyxxMY8jrK

Have been reading Sinclair Lewis, It Can’t Happen Here. Surreal how we as a country are stuck in this cycle.

Also, reading Hofstadter’s essays have been similarly surreal. The same cycles.

My first reaction: Damn, it's sad that we don't have more strong local papers like this left. In 2020, it's the NYT on top, WaPo holding on, and the LA Times and every other paper in the country picking up scraps or folding. Second reaction: yup. https://www.deepnarrative.io/2019/12/29/how-and-why-right-wing-media-brought-us-trump/ …pic.twitter.com/x8xCN3EHLP

I'm not knowledgeable enough to understand a year that would be viewed as the peak of the "days of Father Coughlin," but I'm now extremely curiously to know, to compare how many years us, today, are from the peak of the Tea Party Era, as we understand it
