I mean, read this from 1955. It's hard to think of pieces that are 65 years old that manage to stand up this well.https://theamericanscholar.org/the-pseudo-conservative-revolt/ …

This 2018 piece by
@cterbeek argues Hofstadter's case pretty persuasively.https://ahousedividedapd.com/2018/10/03/movement-conservatism-and-pseudo-conservatism/ …Show this thread -
These sentences were written in 1955 about the far right political movements Hofstadter saw emerging around him, building momentum, and trying to gain a foothold in the Republican Party.pic.twitter.com/wI6e8pWJsg

The final paragraph of that 1955 essay is pretty interesting, both in terms of what he got wrong and also what he saw potentially coming down the pike.pic.twitter.com/imjiHzGelA

Published today. I believe the ghost of Hofstadter just raised his eyebrows knowingly.pic.twitter.com/g6QjatIlvU

Can you elaborate?

In the 1990s it was standard practice to frame one's analysis of conservatism against Hofstadter's idea of "status anxiety." But I think that required people to oversimplify his argument to create a strawman to argue against.

It's perfectly understandable now that we're looking back through the lens of Trump, CPAC, Fox News, Limbaugh's death, and so on.

“Hofstadter was more right than wrong” is an opinion that can get you cut in this profession. I’ve argued this with his treatment of populism in Age of Reform and populism’s relationship to this essay in particular, and even in small circles I have not emerged unscathed

As with anything written 5 decades ago, there will always be things that now don't hold up well. But I think many people who use him as a strawman haven't actually read his work, only uncharitable summaries of it.
