Here's the thing I don't understand about Never Trump conservatives like Bret Stephens. Trump says "I'm gonna do a Banana Republic thing" and Bret's like "meh, he doesn't really mean it." A college student says something brash and Bret says "OMG, they're gonna guillotine me!"

In the 1st instance, the person in question is the President of the world's most heavily armed nation. In the 2nd instance, it is a 1st generation college student w/ a homemade sign and 561 Twitter followers. But it's really that college student who poses the totalitarian threat.

Ok, I just have one more thing to say about this. Rigid dogmatism & closed-mindedness are bad. Every dogmatic leftist I knew in college has evolved in their politics. Most dogmatic conservatives I knew in college (like Bret?) have exactly the same politics they did 30 years ago.

Remind me of the last time a conservative made a good-faith argument? Maybe we should stop acting like they aren't willfully spreading propaganda.

Hedging their bets, so they can write glowing articles about His Supreme Orangeness, and still have dachas on the summer beaches.

Coming from Bret Stephens, neither position reflects principled and rational analysis; both are just fashion statements.

In this regard, I mostly agree with you. But I do think some of them, such as Max Boot, are pretty adamant.

Yes, Boot has definitely been far more outspoken. That said, he still has a tendency to play into the "dangerous, totalitarian left" narrative that, IMO, is mostly a red herring and a distraction.

But what bothers me more is the former Never Trumpers who gave up and now say nothing.

Yes, the anti-anti-Trumpers are the most galling to me as well.
