I don't think anybody really knows how to "fix" a society, and fixing the state is the rational substitution, especially in a successful self-governing country. But it's still a substitution, though it is by necessity.

The "state" part, btw, is not exactly Israel's strong point. So maybe this is by necessity too! Friends who've made aliyah say going into the army is hard but dealing with the Israeli bureaucracy is the *real* national service.

I wish ppl understood that when it comes to the modern state, there are two safety nets, and they compliment each other. The state social safety net is one, but when institutions fail--as they do, and for some it's all they do--is there a societal safety net for you?

We are social creatures who, at a time of great stress, were told to stay away from one another and forbidden from engaging with the communities and organizations that ground us. For months, with no release valve. It didn't lead to our current issues, but it sure didn't help.
