There are Black British journalists, scholars & thinkers who have spoken out. Their context is different, though -- and this is from only knowing the disparities in academia over there.https://twitter.com/qsteph/status/1185188769932201984 …

Where are the Black journalists and organizations in the UK to push back against sanctioned racism in the press?! #WeLoveYouMeghan

The UK media's different than ours. For instance, there's no equivalent to the BBC here -- sure, we have PBS, but that's not the same. Journalism is different over there, too. There's amazing organizing & activism happening in the UK among Black Brits. Follow them. Support.

And the conversation is different. A lot of people here will still argue fiercely that Britain Is Not Racist Like America Is Racist. Which is true only in that the racism here acts somewhat differently.

Yes. Over here, if you say, "Where do you think US racism originated?" you get blank stares. Over there, you were at the dinner party when a guest told me when I was talking about the US election "you Americans get quite heated, don't you?" 🙃

There are some British people who really think America started racism. Like it is a uniquely American thing. I spend some of my days bursting bubbles.

It's amazing, innit? I think it's partly bc it hides in plain sight - all the institutions and elements of Empire are still there but because we *didn't* have to fight a massive war to end slavery, Britain is somehow better? Nah, mate.

I agree. It's so much trouble pointing out how racism is institutionalized in British institutions b/c it's in plain sight and because so much of the history, war, slavery, pillaging etc that funded those institutions did not happen the boundaries of what is now the UK.

They started it then washed their hands. LOL. Just colonized the globe, nbd. It matters because the path to civil rights here can't be the same there. Different context, different laws, different histories.

"We started it then washed our hands. LOL." is ABSOLUTELY the real motto of the British Empire. Everywhere.
