20 years ago #NATO forces bombed Radio Television of #Serbia. My mother could have died that night. She did not because she was lucky enough to be on maternity leave, taking care of me, a 2 year old. She returned to work after the building was destroyed. Some never did.pic.twitter.com/hf5nqJMWGp

16 people died in that unjust attack. First time in history a TV station was a legitimate war target. First time in history young people, mostly technicians, lost their lives after being labelled a "tool of the propaganda machine". They did not want to die that night.pic.twitter.com/kAeoyc13uU

Question today remains, 20 years later: Why? Nobody seems to have answered, nobody seems to have taken the blame, nobody faced justice. But what is justice? Is it what the strong do to the weak? Or is it what the weak suffer because they must?pic.twitter.com/7T0NSE9ZZo

Being too young to remember does not erase the fact that it happened. That divine decisions could decide life and death. It cannot erase the fact that when the sirens roared, people went to their basements in the dark, with their children, families and friends. To hide.

With all respect, RTS was complicit in Milošević's genocidal policies (for which it later apologized). This attack was later deemed legal by the ICTY. While I am happy your mother was safe, revising history by obscuring the broader context is dangerous.

If you want to follow the legalities of the whole bombing, it was never authorised by any international institution, therefore, it was in its essence illegal to begin with. In many wars before TV was complicit with war agendas, yet there never was a historical precedent.

It did not get UNSC approval because Russian/Chinese vetos had already impaired coercive action in Bosnia to protect minorities. Additionally, NATO action was retrospectively considered legitimate by the UN in accordance w the spirit of its Charter.

Furthermore, it was given a de facto green light by the UNSG in early 1999. The absence of UNSC approval is not in itself proof an intervention's illegality.

Read again what you wrote, hopefully now you’ll understand the exact lack of legitimacy it had. If not I suggest this short threadhttps://twitter.com/vidstimac/status/1120753295813951489?s=21 …

NATO claimed that RTS was a legitimate military target under Art 52 of the Geneva convention. Such a broad interpretation would arguably cover e.g. farmland, an army needs food more than propaganda. Art 52 was meant for concrete infrastructure and e.g. H-bomb research facilities https://twitter.com/Serdjosega/status/1120687749969993728 …

Personally, I don't consider waging a war to save thousands of lives illegitimate and I hope you will agree with me on this. The debate on the legality however is far more contentious and the two sides have valid arguments.

Imo it was a legal intervention, but this is open to discussion. But to claim, as you do, that it was undeniably illegal is dishonest and ignores the still ongoing debates on this topic.

At that time I was nearly 20 and "locked" inside my house in PR for 80 days hoping to survive from Milosevic forces who were incited by his media, the famos RTS. Anti Albanian propaganda came from many journalists working at RTS but some were specialists at wormongering, like 1/2

Milovan Drecun. Even today I beleive that this person Drecun should be indicted for war crimes. My informations are that he witnessed and committed crimes against civil Albanian population. The same still works for the President, new president, same politics.2/2

It is appalling how many try to justify & rationalise the deliberate targeting of RTS by NATO. In doing so, what they are really saying is that Serbia was not entitled to any protections or rights as conferred by the Geneva Conventions & other international laws.

civil war doesn't equal ethnic cleansing or genocide, period. I don't recognize the authority of an ad hoc tribunal set up by the victors which allowed testimony w/o cross examination & admitted hearsay ...& that Times of Israel repeated what they said doesn't give it legitmacy
