Thinking about how Diana Wynne-Jones published her first novel at 36 and went on to write more than 25 books, crossing genres and advocating for fantasy, up until she passed away.
It's inspiring: her patience, stamina, and drive to keep attempting good stories.

I published a short story when I was 17, then over the years, had various non-fiction articles and a book published, but I wrote my first novel at 51 years old, and I didn't start writing fiction as my job until I was 58.

Yeah, something I tell my students: Be serious if you want to be serious about it. But life happens. And that doesn't mean you are a failure.

Anne McCaffrey once wrote back to a fan letter I sent. She had some short stories picked up in her late twenties but didn’t publish her first novel until her 40s. She told me it is absolutely never to late to start writing. I think she’d know.

I really think this has everything to do with how much we raise “child geniuses” up and force adults to be in direct competition with actual children. Cause I see 20 year olds+ in EVERY FIELD battling this, myself included. We really need to let everyone explore at their own pace

(Btw this doesn’t mean I don’t think kids doing great things isn’t great. I just think we should let kids be kids and stop acting like just because someone was remarkable at age 5 or 11 or 18 doesn’t mean someone else can’t be remarkable at 50 or 98)

Right?? Like 36 is somehow over the hill...

As a 37 year old I can offer only this advice: be afraid of the ravages of time.

So true. And what's even crazier is that we don't realize the direct connection between the amount of years lived (ie life experiences) and the amount of material one has to draw from to write about. By 40, 45 many of us have a whole LOT of fresh material!
-
Of course, I don't want to downplay that someone very young is capable of writing w/ the maturity and experience of someone twice their age. It's not THAT rare. People start at different times. Problem is when we glorify those instances and ascribe a timeline onto art.
