It was a very hard day for me. Ms.McAuliffe received her Masters from Bowie State University. I was a sophomore at Bowie State when she visited the school before she was to make that historic journey. That day, I was at my internship and saw the explosion on television.

I was working at Thiokol Corp (we made the solid rocket motors) and listening to the stories the engineers told of trying, but failing, to stop the launch. The engineers were overruled after being told the night before to put on their management hats

Sad times indeed. Two days ago was the 51st anniversary of Apollo 1, when a fire in the command module took the lives of three astronauts doing a routine checkout on the launch pad.
