#NYVRA builds on the legacy of effective state voting rights acts in California and Washington, and recognizes that even states like ours are not immune to voter suppression, voter intimidation, or racial gerrymandering and other forms of vote dilution. (3/7)

#NYVRA doesn’t just stop abuses. It also expands #VotingRights and strengthens our democracy through diversity. For example, the law provides greater language assistance to voters who are limited English proficient than currently required by federal law. (4/7)

Most importantly, #NYVRA ensures that NY won’t lose the progress we’ve made by instituting a preclearance regime modeled on the most effective civil rights law in US history: Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act, which #SCOTUS disabled nearly 7 years ago. (5/7)

The law gives our state attorney general’s office & civil rights groups effective tools to protect New Yorkers’ #VotingRights. These protections are especially important when the current Dept of Justice won't even pay lip service to enforcing the Voting Rights Act (6/7).
