A 1997 court settlement called Flores v. Reno prevents the gov’t from keeping children with their parents if the parents are charged with a crime for crossing the border illegally. The law doesn't have to be enforced this way due to prosecutorial discretion.

The law doesn't have to be enforced this way due to prosecutorial discretion. So are you admitting trump is responsible for this new abomination? You know he could rescind this with a phone call to sessions so are you going to pressure him to do so? Your constituents want to know

I think he's trying to have it both ways-- liberals could read his tweet in a way that satisfies them. Trumpers could read his tweet in a way that satisfies THEM. In the end, his words mean NOTHING, he DOES NOTHING, and the children are still tormented, preyed upon, and caged.

So what are you going to do about it? This is a deliberate action because @GOP didn’t get 45’s wall funded & SCOTUS approval for ban. It’s inhumane; so don’t try to justify it by quoting the law Executive Order could change this tonight. Audio is horrific #FamilesBelongTogether

A White House spokesman referred to a DHS statement regarding a 1997 legal settlement and 2008 antitrafficking law affecting minors who are apprehended without a parent present: Let's keep it truthful and not try to spin it or obfucate to muddy the issue. @factcheckdotorg
