1. 2/3 of US $ exist outside of the US 2. China owns more USD than any other 3. China keeps them out of circulation to drive the value of USD up 4. A Chinese sell off of USD will greatly reduce the buying power of the dollar. 5. Basically the same as printing more dollars.

China currently holds more than $1.2 trillion in US Treasuries. We have a $1T deficit. The Fed's balance sheet is still fully loaded from QE. If China wants to play hardball, all it has to do is stop buying Treasuries, as it has threatened in the past.
