58 years ago, white supremacists bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, killing Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Carol Denise McNair. Honoring their lives must include a commitment to justice.

58 years ago, four innocent children were taken far too soon when a bomb was planted outside Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. Today, as we honor the lives of Denise, Carole, Addie Mae & Cynthia, we must recommit ourselves to striving for justice, equality & unity.

Today, , , , and again courageously shone a light on the culture of complicity, exploitation, and abuse of power they experienced. They are right to demand better from the FBI, USA Gymnastics, and the Senate.

Today we heard from the gymnasts who were failed by the FBI when it neglected to properly investigate the abuse by Larry Nassar. I’ve met several times with these brave women. Their strength and courage is astonishing. They’re role models for all of us.

MUST-WATCH: Maggie Nichols testifies that USA Gymnastics and the Olympic Committee "created a false narrative" that allowed Larry Nassar to retire, rather than be prosecuted; meanwhile, the FBI failed to investigate reports and presented false information to OIG investigators.

This is heartbreaking. Today's testimonies from Simone Biles and her teammates make it painfully obvious that they were failed over and over again by the very systems put in place to protect them. These women deserve justice — and that requires accountability.

Cases like these make clear that sexual abuse of young athletes is a persistent problem that teams, athletic associations, and other institutions are failing to prevent. It shocks the conscience when those failures come from law enforcement itself—yet that is what happened here.
