I’m exploring legislative fixes to prevent another Sun Country Airlines debacle from happening. It should be simple: when somebody buys a plane ticket, they should trust that the airline is going to get them home. https://www.smith.senate.gov/content/sen-tina-smith-exploring-legislation-prevent-another-sun-country-airlines-fiasco …

I think how Sun Country handled the situation was regrettable, but they're certainly suffering the consequences in the court of public opinion. Is additional legislation really necessary here?

I'm inclined to agree. Let businesses run their business. Gov't isn't the solution, capitalism is. @SunCountryAir is going to suffer publicity-wise and nobody was hurt. Other airlines will pounce on this PR debacle and SCA will either get refined by fire or fall by the wayside

No one was hurt? Maybe not physically, but their wallets sure are. Do you realize how much short notice one way tickets are?

Sun Country is not in business to protect passengers wallets... only their own. If SCA wants to remain in business they will need to make things right (and it sounds like all passengers will be reimbursed for all extra cost to get home now).

$200 change fees are a bigger issue that affect more people. Airlines are a monopoly in the US. We either need monopoly regulation or a competitive airline industry.

That sounds simple, but also would guarantee flights would be more expensive for everyone. The market took care of this problem, so there’s little reason to legislate behavior. If you draft something, will you also bundle it with cutting regulations and taxes for airlines?

Getting people where they want to go is what airlines do 99% of the time.

I applaud your initiative but the possible precedent is dangerous. Airlines should not be held responsible for delays caused by weather. If held responsible, all airlines would incur damaging costs due to lightening strikes, hurricanes, blizzards, etc. Something to consider.
