When I became a new mom in 1987, and had my second child in 1989, I worked for myself as a small business owner and was lucky that I could take the time off to care for my newborn. But having access to paid family and medical leave shouldn’t be about luck. #FMLA25

Workers shouldn't be forced to go without a paycheck when they take time off to care for a new child or a sick family member. That's why I'm supporting the
#FAMILYAct, which would provide paid leave for private-sector workers.#FMLA25 https://www.facebook.com/USSenTinaSmith/posts/593593130987118 …Show this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Did state employees get parental leave or true family leave? Does it apply to those caring for dying parents, for example?
-
I understood it to be only for those who have a baby, which is a very narrow definition of family. It is just as important +

to be with our own parents & siblings at the end of their lives as it was for parents to be w us at the beginning.
-
Not everyone chooses to have children. Most of us have parents & other family. Being with them in times of need just as impt
-
I appreciate your support for family leave for all, as long as it is true family leave, not just for new parents.

Last year I learned FMLA doesn't cover siblings. A coworker was the primary caretaker for her brother as he died frm cancer.
