We need to take a holistic approach to health care–and that means recognizing the relationship between health and housing. Those with mental health issues are at a greater risk of homelessness, and a lack of stable housing corresponds with worse health outcomes.

Held a roundtable discussion in Rochester with members of the Coalition for Rochester Area Housing to talk about the region’s housing needs, and resources needed to ensure an adequate supply of affordable housing as the region continues to grow.pic.twitter.com/nPUFDOhhml

In order to accomplish this we must have TRUE mental health parity. Policies are still allowed to be written with mental health as a specific exclusion.

I'd like to see this applied to Long-term disability insurance as well. Insurers reject valid claims anyway, but one way they do it is by treating mental health claims differently (i.e. time limits), and then claiming any mental health component is the entirety of the claim.

Can we talk more about affordable housing? Not just for those that are homeless, but for those that could benefit from an infrastructure of starter homes vs McMansions.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've struggled with mental illnesses throughout my life. Three times I've come within an inch of attempting suicide, each time corresponding with periods of homelessness.

Have you ever read Mountains Beyond Mountains? NF about a doctor in Haiti who recognized this connection--more about physical health, which may also be relevant.
